Privacy & Data FAQ

Do you store my IP address or location data?

No, we do not store any of your personal data. Your IP address and location information are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent to or stored on our servers.

When you use WhereAmI.com, all location calculations happen locally on your device. We only see the same information that any website you visit would see - your public IP address, which is necessary for the service to function.

Why do you need third-party services?

We use third-party services because they provide specialized functionality that would be impractical to build ourselves:

  • ipify: Provides your current public IP address
  • ipapi.co/ipwho.is: Converts IP addresses to geographic locations
  • OpenStreetMap: Provides map tiles and geographic data
  • Nominatim: Converts GPS coordinates to human-readable addresses

These services are privacy-focused and don't track individual users. We've chosen them specifically for their commitment to user privacy.

Can third-party services track me?

While we've selected privacy-focused services, third-party services can potentially see your IP address when you make requests to them. However, they cannot:

  • Access your GPS location (this stays in your browser)
  • See your browsing history or other personal data
  • Install cookies or tracking scripts
  • Link your IP to other online activities

If you're concerned about IP tracking, consider using a VPN before visiting WhereAmI.com.

Is GPS data safe?

Yes, GPS data is completely safe. When you enable GPS on WhereAmI.com:

  • GPS coordinates are processed entirely in your browser
  • No GPS data is ever sent to our servers
  • GPS data is not shared with third-party services
  • GPS data is not stored anywhere

GPS data is only used locally to calculate distances and verify your VPN status. It's the most private way to test your VPN connection.

Do you use cookies or tracking?

No cookies, no tracking, no analytics. WhereAmI.com is designed to be completely transparent about data collection:

  • No cookies are set or read
  • No analytics or tracking scripts
  • No user behavior monitoring
  • No advertising networks

The only data we can see is what's visible in standard web server logs (IP address, user agent, timestamp), which is standard for any website.

How can I verify your privacy claims?

You can verify our privacy practices in several ways:

  • View page source: Check that there are no tracking scripts or analytics code
  • Browser developer tools: Monitor network requests to see exactly what data is sent
  • Privacy extensions: Use tools like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger to detect tracking
  • VPN testing: Test the site through different VPN locations to verify no location tracking

We believe in transparency and encourage users to verify our privacy practices.

What happens if you change your privacy policy?

If we make changes to our privacy policy:

  • Changes will be clearly marked with dates
  • Major changes will be announced on the homepage
  • Previous versions will remain accessible
  • Users will have time to review changes before they take effect

We're committed to maintaining the same high privacy standards. Any changes that would reduce user privacy would require significant justification and would be clearly communicated.
